How to Discover Your Business Niche

Hey CEO Mom's are you struggling with who to market your business to? Have you ever heard that you should "niche down" or "find your niche" when it comes time to marketing your services or products? The goal of this post is to explain the importance of having a niche and how to your discover your niche. So why is it such a big deal? Well, identifying your niche early on can be the difference between you wasting hundreds of dollars or thousands of dollars towards your marketing efforts.

Let me explain.

I will admit when I first heard the term, I had my own definition of what a "niche" was but once I started researching and got involved in selling products online, I soon came to realize that having a niche is a very important component to the success of any business.

Essentially, your niche is your target market, ie customers who are the most likely to purchase your specific product or service. Many new startups waste money & time targeting a broad population of consumers instead of targeting those who are more likely to purchase. So I really want you to think quality over quantity as you are determining your niche audience. You want quality leads viewing your content and your advertisements.

So How do you Discover your Niche?

Before you even identify your niche here are a few questions you need to ask:

Discover your passion

  1. What do I enjoy talking about or what am I really good at?

  2. What is the one thing that your friends, family, or co-workers always come to you for?

  3. What questions do people ask you repeatedly about a certain topic?

  4. Think about some of the challenges in your life that you have overcome, and out of those that made you successful today, which one are you the most passionate about to share with others?

  5. What is the one idea that keeps you up at night or that you often daydream of doing?

If you don't automatically have any answers to these questions, conduct a survey or a poll. Ask family and friends for feedback. Sometimes it is hard to identify what others think we are good at, so don't give up just ask 5-10 of your closest friends or family. Discover your product (will use product and service interchangeably)

  1. Is my idea or product unique or a specialty product

  2. What population needs this products?

  3. What problem is the product or service solving?

  4. What is the target age range?

  5. Is this product easily available online? In store?

  6. Check Google keywords to see who is searching for this product?

  7. Identify whether or not your product or service is solving an unmet need.

  8. Find out Is there a demand for your service or product?

  9. Are their variations in the product?

  10. Is it a seasonal niche?

  11. Are the products in this niche selling currently?

  12. In what ways have you validated your product?

  13. What specific interest groups want or need this product?

Once you have answered these questions and have done the necessary research you can then move on to the next step. It is very important to learn as much as possible about your products, services, and industry.

One of the key reasons to have a niche is because ultimately

Your niche=your audience==sales

Knowing your specific target audience will keep you from spending money advertising to people who could care less about your product or your service. For example, instead of targeting ALL women 20-65 years old for your vitamin supplement brand, you can use Google analytics and other online tools to target those women with certain behavior and interest that have done the following:

  1. Purchased a vitamin supplement before

  2. Liked or commented on a vitamin supplement brand on Facebook

  3. Are interested in Fitness or healthy living websites

  4. Wellness gurus who tend to purchase supplements, etc.

When you know the behavior of your audience or customers you are in a better position to sell your idea, product, or services to them. What is even sweeter is when you find out that they (your niche audience) are online searching or looking for a product just like yours. Successful search engine optimization is when the magic happens.
